Harold Miller

Harold Miller, a lifelong Pennsylvanian, is currently President of Future Strategies LLC, a management and policy consulting firm in Pittsburgh. A major focus of his work in the past several years has been on healthcare quality improvement and payment reform, both in the Pittsburgh area and nationally. He also serves as Adjunct Professor of Public Policy and Management at the Heinz School at Carnegie Mellon University and teaches a graduate course in public policy analysis.
Having served as the President of the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania until November, 2005, Miller knows a thing or two about economic development. Prior to that, he was Associate Dean of the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University, and during the 1980s served as Director of the Pennsylvania Governor's Office of Policy Development.
Miller writes the monthly Regional Insights column for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, maintains the
Pittsburgh’s Future blog and Web site, and also contributes to the
Pittsburgh Regional Indicators project.
In light of the financial and economic crisis facing the country and the world, we've asked Miller to blog this week about five ways to transform Pennsylvania's economy to ensure that we stay competitive in years to come--years that will likely see the rise of a new national and regional economy and a new way of doing business.
