Even though it’s what drives her business, you won’t hear Sharon Ryan go on a Newman-from-Seinfeld rant about the merits of the United States Postal Service. While it’s no secret that mail isn’t what it used to be, that hasn’t stopped Ryan’s company from becoming a major force in the direct mail services industry.

Mail volume might be trending downward, but businesses are also reducing or eliminating their mailrooms, paving the way for Dasher Inc. to serve that role for individual customers or aggregate mail from a variety of businesses to save on postage. Dasher focuses on high-risk, sophisticated mailings from 100,000 to one million that require a good deal of up-front programming and have to be both accurate and on-time. It also manages mailing lists and provides printing and delivery/courier services.

The company, which Ryan bought in 2008 and recently celebrated 25 years in business, handles everything from advertising to insurance applications and bank statements. Its revenue grew by 24 percent in 2009, when it hired five new employees, and Ryan expects to grow and hire more, mostly because Dasher, when it comes down to it, is a technology company that makes things easier and cheaper for its customers.
