When United Corrstack started operations in 1993, the paper mill's mission was to service both independent and integrated box shop customers in the Mid-Atlantic region. As the company has grown, it has also become a leader in sustainability.

Its product is made from 100 percent recycled corrugated cartons, saving about 6,000 acres of trees. United Corrstack is certified by the Sustainable Forests Initiative and also offers consultation for customers on old corrugated cardboard recycling programs.

The company is about to embark on its biggest green initiative yet. United Corrstack expects to begin running it own power plant, Evergreen Community Power, in the summer of 2009. The $135 million project brought 25 new jobs and about 50 additional offsite jobs to process and transport biofuels that will run the plant, supplying the company with another revenue stream from the sale of electricity.

The entire project was local, as Ben Franklin Technology Partners linked the company with Northampton Community College's Electrotechnology Applications Center to research and quantify potential sources of biofuel in the region. As a result, United Corrstack will get its biofuels, made up almost entirely of material headed for the landfill, from a local supplier in Berks County.

United Corrstack provides next-day delivery throughout the region. Most of its 30 customers are within 150 miles of its Reading plant, where it employs 80. The company also offers specialized customer services like bar coded labels for warehouse management systems, electronic data interchange transmissions and just-in-time inventory.
