KE-TV: New Phipps Building in Pittsburgh Goes Beyond LEED Platinum

Pittsburgh's reputation for sustainability and smart redevelopment was reinforced this spring when the Center for Sustainable Landscapes opened in the Oakland neighborhood near Schenley Park.

It's one of the world's first "living buildings," which goes beyond LEED Platinum requirements to include net-zero energy as well as a host of other green features, and is part of the Living Building Challenge.

The building is part of a $20 million Phase III of a multi-year expansion project at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. Other collaborators included Berner International, PPG, Center for Building Performance and Diagnostics at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh's Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, Green Building Alliance and the Design Alliance.

In this video, Phipps Executive Director Richard Piacentini talks about the massive undertaking and why it has proven successful.
