Tech-savvy activists will converge on Pittsburgh August 13-16 for
Netroots, a face-to-face confab for folks who usually connect online.
The annual meeting, an outgrowth of the YearlyKos convention convened by Markos Moulitsas, aims to leverage online tools to connect activists across the liberal spectrum in international relations, health care reform, climate change, union organizing and grass-roots politics. Over 2,000 people are expected at the four-day conference at Pittsburgh's David L. Lawrence Convention Center.
"Last year, people were very focused on making change at the polls," says spokesperson Mary Rickles. "This year, people want to remain engaged in governance and policy. That's a big focus on what we're doing."
Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, will address an interactive keynote session on health care. Other speakers include environmental activist and actor Ed Begley Jr., and Jay Rosen, founder of
NewAssignment.net, an open-source reporting project. The conference will also screen a series of documentary and short films, including premieres.
Registration is $275 per person, $50 for students.
