Body scanning made its debut at Pittsburgh International Airport with few problems or objections, reports the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The so-called Backscatter scanner installed this weekend in Pittsburgh uses X-ray beams to produce a two-sided image of a person's body that resembles a chalk etching, with blurred facial features. Objects placed or carried on the body are easy to spot.
TSA officials found no weapons or prohibited items on more than 300 passengers who passed through the scanner. Its screening is optional, but passengers who refuse must undergo alternate screening that includes a pat-down search. Two people did on Monday and yesterday, citing invasion of privacy.
