Alloy Surfaces Co., a Chester, Pa.-based subsidiary of Chemring Group plc of England, has the distinction of being the only company in the word that makes a special type of countermeasure for planes and helicopters attacked by heat-seeking missiles. That distinction has won it a contract from the Air Force that could be worth nearly $52 million, reported the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The contract is for the company’s special material decoys, which are a defense for aircraft against heat-seeking missiles. Unlike conventional magnesium flares, they are virtually unobservable to the naked eye.
The journal previously reported that the countermeasures, once fired, emit a substance that heats up and releases infrared radiation when it hits the air, drawing missiles away from aircraft.
