After a decade of planning and fundraising, the August Wilson Center for African American Culture opened its doors in downtown Pittsburgh on Sept. 18, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The center diversifies the entertainment offerings of Pittsburgh's theater district with a $39.5 million facility named for Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright August Wilson, who grew up a mile away in Pittsburgh's Hill District, where his plays were set.
The LEED-certified building in the Cultural District, named after the late Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, includes a 486-seat theater, two gallery spaces, a multi-purpose room and a flexible hall for educational programs.
