Chatham University’s school colors are purple and white, but they might as well just be green. The Pittsburgh institution counts environmental trailblazer Rachel Carson among its alumni and her legacy can be seen in nearly every corner of the school’s activities, curriculum and campus.
In the last few years it has established its School of Sustainability and the Environment, hired its first sustainability coordinator, and added an Environmental Biology track to its Master of Science in Biology program.
Chatham is also home to an arboretum, purchases 15 percent wind power, uses green cleaning products and a Toyota Prius for its public safety vehicle, is a leader in composting, and runs biodiesel shuttle buses for students. This video highlights opportunities for students to participate in gardening and local/organic food on campus.
