Using technology that's similar to what's used in video game animation, students in Penn State University's Golf Management program can assess every angle and motion of the golf swing. The school hopes the machines, which cost tens of thousands of dollars each and is the same technology used by the pros on the PGA Tour, create better players and teachers coming out of its PGA-accredited program--one of the most respected in the Northeast.

The swing analyzers are housed in the school's Golf Teaching and Research Center, which opened last November. They employ 3D motion capture technology to pinpoint specific flaws in the swing from set-up to follow-through. Penn State's machines utilize 3D versions of pro golfers to help students develop key components of the golf swing and make it more efficient. The machines have the potential to change the face of golf instruction and help grow the game even more as they become more accessible.
