PA’s first all-green hotel rises in Nittany Lion country

The first of its kind in Pennsylvania and only the second in the nation after Napa Valley’s Gaia Hotel and Spa, the “P” Hotel & Spa in State College has been under construction since March. With cement poured for its indoor swimming pool, the steel frame for the 100-suite structure is en route to delivery, according to Patty Kleban of Tricore Group LLC, developer of the project in partnership with Hospitality Asset Management Co., which will operate the facility.

Part of a lifestyle center being developed as a tourist destination near the campus of Penn State University, the “P” reuses the site of a former Lowe’s hardware depot whose materials were recycled for construction of the new site. In addition to providing a totally smoke-free environment, the facility will also feature extensive use of solar energy, cater to hybrid vehicles, use low-emission paints and carpeting, provide showers and lockers to encourage employee fitness, and use numerous other sustainable guidelines to earn a LEED Gold certification.

Using a property management program popular at resorts worldwide, the “P” will provide a service to encourage rental of the suites to paying guests during periods of owners’ non-occupancy. Prices for sale of the suites start around $340,000 for a one-bedroom suite of 689 square feet.
