Spectacle: Sands Casino Opens in Bethlehem

A sparking new slots casino opened last week at the former site ofBethlehem Steel, once an industrial behemoth whose blast furnaces onceforged steel beams for American skyscrapers. Now, the former foundry ishome to Sands Casino Resort, a massive slots parlor that boasts 3,000gaming machines and four restaurants in a 139,000-square-foot space.

When completed, the $743 million resort will include5,000 slot machines, a hotel and retail space on 126acres. It is also expected to create about 1,000 permanent jobs in the region, draw up to 5million visitors annually and generate some $10 million a year intax revenue for the City of Bethlehem.
